DAY 1

Transfer to San Pedro de Atacama (CHILE), in the heart of Northern Andes

Calama (CHILE) - San Pedro de Atacama (CHILE)

≃ 102km, 1h15, Ruta 23

 

Meeting point at CALAMA Airport (CJC).

Pick up of the 4x4 vehicles and transfer to San Pedro de Atacama (102km, alt. 2500m). Hotel checkin, walking tour, dinner & overnight in San Pedro de Atacama.

DAY 2

Crossing the wild and magnificent altiplano

San Pedro de Atacama (CHILE) - Tilcara (ARG)

≃ 436km, 5h18+stops, Rutas 27&52

~8:00am : Breakfast and hotel checkout.

Drive up to the altiplano and crossing the Salar de Tara, stop at the edge of magnificent lagoons and on the slopes of volcanos, with observation of the local fauna (guanacos, llamas,...) in a lunar landscape, with the silence of the high mountain.

Crossing the Chile/Argentina border at Paso de Jama (alt. 4200m), and the Salar de Olaroz bordering the production of lithium carbonate. Back to civilization entering in “end of the world city” Susques (alt. 3900m).

Crossing the Salar Salinas Grandes and finally the Cuesta de Lipán (alt. 4170m), a stretch of mountain range with incredible arid and wild  landscapes. Beautiful road down to Purmamarca and Tilcara.

Arrival in Tilcara (alt. 2250m) in late afternoon.

DAY 3

Quebrada of Humahuaca till the Bolivian border

~8:00am : Breakfast and hotel checkout.

Morning walk in Tilcara and Omaguaca era ruins (Pucará archeological site),

Then begins our 4x4 journey in Quebrada de Humahuaca, with several stops : 

. Purmamarca, typical andean village with specific architecture and nice crafts, and the famous 7 Colours Mountain, aged 75 million years.

. Uquía and Quebrada de las Señoritas (caves, canyon,…)

. Humahuaca village and its typical street market

. Abra Pampa and its Laguna de los Pozuelos Monument

. La Intermedia and its artisanal cheese production

. Pumahuasi and its medicinal herbs production

Arrival in La Quiaca (alt. 3442m) in the afternoon.

Optional :

Excursion to IRUYA (alt. 2800m), one of the most remote and traditional village in the Argentine Andes, by an amazing dirt road (going up to 4000m altitude) in 3h20 round trip from Ruta 9 (access near Abra Pampa). NO EXTRA COST.

DAY 4

Bolivian altiplano

La Quiaca (ARG) – Uyuni (BOLIVIA)

≃ 330km, 5h30+stops, Rutas 14&21

~8:00am : Breakfast and hotel checkout.

Crossing the Argentine/Bolivia border, and Bolivian Altiplano through villages and towns like Chuquiago, Tupiza, Oploca and Uyuni. Driving in deep and authentic Bolivian Altiplano...

DAY 5

Salar de Uyuni

Uyuni (BOLIVIA) – San Juan (BOLIVIA)

≃ 300km, ~5h+stops

~8:00am : Breakfast and hotel checkout.

Salar de Uyuni (alt. 3600m) is the 1st salt flat in the world, covering 10,5 million km² and 100kms length. One full day to experience the immensity of a rare whiteness, with beautiful reflections and interesting attractions in our program : Ojos del Salar, Dakar Monument, Train Cemetery, Incahuasi & Pia Pia islands... Finally, crossing and sunset in Salar de Uyuni.

DAY 6

Lagoons and desert of Southern Bolivian altiplano

San Juan (BOLIVIA) – Laguna Colorada (BOLIVIA)

≃ 260km, 6h+stops, Rutas 5&701

~8:00am : Breakfast and hotel checkout.

Hard to leave Salar de Uyuni ! But this is to discover other unforgettable natural beauties : Volcano Ollague (alt. 5870m), three beautiful coloured lagoons with flamingos and llamas, Siloli desert, Stone Tree and finally Laguna Colorada in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve where we stop for the dinner and night in a hotel refuge at 4400m altitude !     

DAY 7

Sur Lípez desert

Laguna Colorada (BOLIVIA) – San Pedro de Atacama OR Calama (CHILE)

≃ 160km, 3h45+stops, Rutas B243&27 (Chile)

~5:00am : Breakfast and refugee checkout.

Drive to Geyser Sol de la Mañana for sunrise (distant 31km, 0h35, alt. 4850m), then to Termas de Polques for a great morning bath in thermal hot springs pools (30 to 35ºC). Our journey continues with the surprising Salvador Dali desert, the beautiful Laguna Verde (alt. 4300m) at the foot of Licancabur Volcano (alt. 5910m). Crossing the Bolivia/Chile border, where we find the asphalt road, a real carpet that brings us back to San Pedro de Atacama in less than 1hr.

Sunset in Vale de la Luna (distant 6,4km, 15mn).

Hotel checkin, dinner and overnight in San Pedro de Atacama, OR in Calama (+102km, +1h15) in case of early flight at Calama Airport on Day 8, and consequently 4x4 delivery at Calama Airport on Day 7.

DAY 8

Bye bye Northern Andes !

Breakfast, hotel checkout and transfer to Calama Airport 2h15 before flight departure time OR 4h before flight departure time in case of overnight in San Pedro de Atacama on Day 7, and consequently 4x4 delivery at Calama Airport on Day 8.

Afternoon Visit of Salar de Atacama (only in case of early landing in Calama, after a night flight)

After lunch in San Pedro de Atacama, tour in Salar de Atacama, going through typical villages Toconao and Socaire, and Salar de Atacama Museum.

DAY 8

Geyzers El Tatio (only in case of late departure in Calama, before a night flight)

≃ 170km, 3h25+stops, Ruta B245 (Chile)

Wake up at 4am ! Drive up to El Tatio Geyser for sunrise (alt. 4300m). On the way back to San Pedro : Relaxation in hot spring pools (Termas de Puritama, alt. 3300m).
