History & Culture
Integrated with the Serra da Bodoquena National Park, Bonito is an ecotourism center whose main attractions are the natural landscapes, the dives in rivers of transparent waters, waterfalls, caves, caverns and dolines. Bonito has more than 4,000 species of plants, and its waters and rivers are home to more than 2,000 species of fish and aquatic.
HISTORICALLY, the 1st non Indian to discover the Bonito region, having also been his 1st clerk and notary, is Captain Luiz da Costa Leite Falcão, who arrives there in 1869, and acquires 10.5 leagues in the lands of Fazenda Rincão Bonito. In 1915, the District of Paz of Bonito is officially created, with an area separated from the Municipality of Miranda and administratively subordinated to it, but in 1943 it is annexed to the Federal territory of Ponta Porã as the District of Paz of Miranda, reintegrating into the state of Mato Grosso. In 1948, it becomes a Municipality, based in the city of Bonito, which in 1977 becomes part of the current state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The origin of the Pantanal would result, not as was thought from the separation of the ocean millions of years ago, but from block failures during the Tertiary period. In a way, the Pantanal is an inland sea, with animals also present in the sea, but the wetland of the Pantanal is due to the slow drainage of the waters that flow through the region of the middle Paraguay.
HISTORICALLY, the Portuguese Aleixo Garcia was the first to visit the territory in 1524. Attracted by precious stones and metals, including gold, used as ornaments by indigenous people who already inhabited the region, he reached the Paraguay River through the Miranda River, arriving in the region of current city of Corumbá. In the following decades, several Spanish adventurers crossed the region : Juan Ayolas, Álvaro Nunes Cabeza de Vaca,... Between 1878 and 1930, Corumbá was the main commercial and river hub in Mato Grosso, but then lost its importance to Cuiabá and Campo Grande, until the division of states in 1977.
While enjoying fantastic landscapes, we can also feast on delicious local gastronomy !
